Lifting hearts, raising money -- musician Maurice Kirya

Ugandan musician Maurice Kirya talks about the arts and how African youth can fight poverty.

Influenced by the beauty and unique spirit of his home, Uganda, Maurice Kirya’s ‘Mwooyo’ music blends soul, Afro, and R&B. A professional singer at age 15, he recorded with popular Ugandan gospel, rap, and jazz artists and as "Mister Deejay" hosts a radio show showcasing live acts from all over Africa. In 2007 he won a Pearl of African Music Award. In 2008 he and his friend Kawesa staged a “Music with Heart” concert to raise funds for open heart surgery at the children’s charity ward in the International Hospital Kampala.
